Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974) has been called one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. Originally from Kuressaare, he lived there between 1901-1906 and, according to his words, visited his home town during one summer month in 1928. The exhibition dedicated to him on the Concrete Day focuses on the key words “the Convent building”, “corner solutions”, “prime geometry”, “light”, etc.

August Komendantwhose 110th anniversary we celebrate this year, is probably the most renowned Estonian civil engineer in the world, perhaps more famous abroad than in his homeland. He gained international fame as the designer of concrete structures. The speech presented on the Concrete Day gives an overview of Komendant’s career, where his cooperation with architect Louis Kahn played an important role.

The requisites for entering the Concrete Day are pre-registration (until March 10) and invitations.

The board of the Concrete Association of Estonia has elected Tiit Roots, the project manager of AS Peri, as the new chairman of the board. The former chairman Kalle Suitslepp led the Concrete Association of Estonia for two years, from 2014 to 2016.

“Over the years, the Concrete Association of Estonia has become a visible, well-functioning organisation. We have tried to include as many people and companies operating in the sector as possible in our professional activity,” said Kalle Suitslepp, the former chairman of the board of the Concrete Association of Estonia. “Electing a new chairman is sure to encourage integrating new ideas and keeps the management fresh,” Suitslepp added.

According to Suitslepp, over the years, a strong basis has been established for a system of professional in-service training, incl. issuing instruction manuals related to concrete.

Tiit Roots: “I would like to thank the former chairman of the board Kalle Suitslepp for his successful and comprehensive management! I am delighted that he will continue on in the board, which will ensure the continuous management of the Association. We will try to increase the popularity of concrete as the most important contemporary construction material even further.”

The Concrete Association of Estonia re-elected its former eight-member board on the ordinary annual meeting that took place on 18 February:

Design project: Apartment buildings
Address: Tartu Road 52D and Lastekodu St. 23

Services: design, manufacture and transport of reinforced concrete elements
Product nomenclature: Hollow core slabs, columns, beams, inner and outer wall elements, and stairs

Apartment buildings constructed near Tartu Road will be original with their external finish, due to brick surfaces, which will cover triple-layer reinforced concrete elements of the buildings. Such surface finish is well suitable for urban environment and is timeless.

„To achieve brick surface, we place screen net and form fabric to the bottom of mould upon casting of elements, and 20 mm thick brick plates on the top. This is a job requiring accuracy and time, but the result speaks for itself,“ the sales and project manager of E-Betoonelement Tõnu Ernits described the production process of brick surface of the buildings.

Characteristic features of the contemporary apartment buildings based on element solution are fast construction time, high sound and noise resistance, energy efficiency, durability (low maintenance need), security and beautiful architecture.
